Fletton: Outdoors
Children love to play outdoors and so at Alpha Fletton, our accessible outdoor area is used as much as possible for play and to help our children develop their understanding of the world. As members of Early Years Outdoors, we encourage the use our outdoor facilities to to help each child's development in the Early Years Foundation Stage framework. The secure area uses a safety surface to provide a safe area for children to play in, with staff on hand to provide encouragement and help with any bumps and scrapes along the way.
We provide children with the opportunity to explore the world around them, with activities such as den-building, watching nature and exploration of materials such as sand and mud. Our garden helps children to learn about where their food comes from and the natural world as they plant seeds and care for seedlings, growing peas, sunflowers and potatoes.
As they are developing their fine and gross motor skills on our wide range of slides, bikes and equipment, they enjoy playing with their friends - developing their social skills working with others. Trips to the local park provide further opportunities to develop their spacial awareness, climbing on rocks and other equipment - developing as they have fun. There is an opportunity for the children to participate in art and music activities, making marks, painting pictures and using instruments and objects to create music. This further supports activities inside the nursery and provides a continuation for creative development.
Recognising that some children learn and develop better outside, the use of our outdoor facilities gives them the opportunity to use our equipment and further their development in a different and beneficial setting. Our 'indoor-outdoor' room gives the children the opportunity to play outdoors in all weathers, using our open multi-weather canopy to give children the choice of whether to play under-sky or under-cover throughout the year.
